Trent Reznor speaks about scoring The Social Network

Here's a great interview from PBS's Travis Smiley show that aired yesterday (12/14/2010). It's amazing to watch this Trent now compare to the interviews he used to give in his Lollapalooza touring days.

The Fabulous Andy Murphy with Mr. Mo

Check out Andy Murphy with Mr. Mo freezing their arses off while performing Andy's song Daddy's Gun at the Peal Basin in Montreal, Qc. It's a great song but just watching this makes my fingers cold. Watch for them to be touring eastern Canada this March.

The Decemberists last night on Conan

Check out the The Decemberists debuting a new track of their forthcoming album, "the King is Dead." The album that will be released on January 11, 2011 is described as a back to basic's album and will not be the rock-opera that their previous effort was. Check out the excellent "Down By the Water," featuring Gillian Welch below:

Kid Cudi with the Roots and St Vincent!?

Yes it really happened, in this crazy world of interesting artist mash-up things are starting to get less surprising. Kanye working with Justin Vernon and now Kid Cudi with indie rocker St. Vincent.
Certain hip-hop mixing with indie-rock just seems to be kinda natural in a sense. Some hip-hop artist are really try to push the art form in new directions which is refreshing considering it seemed to be stuck in place for quite some time.

The Walking Dead

I had been waiting with much anticipation for the Halloween Premier of The Walking Dead and it did not disappoint. This Graphic novel come-to-life has great looking zombies and a so far intriguing storyline. The shot of the main character, Rick Grimes riding the horse into a destroyed Atlanta was amazing...I can't wait for next week. Could this show be the show to fill the "Lost" void? Time will tell I guess.

Is Mike Skinner, AKA the Streets coming back?

The streets have released a new single/video leading one to suspect that the North American cult hero/UK superstar is about to finally release a new album. Hopefully the new album will be more in tune with his first two amazing records than his more recent out put. The new single is pretty good, check it out:

Cool Bad Religion Cover

Here's a great Bad Religion cover by Frank Turner, who I was very impressed by at Osheaga this past summer...too bad I only caught his last few songs. The song is "My Poor Friend Me" from Bad Religion's 1993 album Recipe for Hate. There is also an interesting cover of "Suffer" by Tegan and Sara.

Interesting new video from Philip Selway

What happens when you throw a cinder block off a tall building that is tied to your leg...maybe not what you'd expect. Here is the great video and song from Philip Selway (aka the drummer from Radiohead) directed by David Altobelli:

Yo Gabba Gabba! with the Roots

For those of you unfamiliar Yo Gabba Gabba! is a children's show on Treehouse TV that was created by Christian Jacobs, the singer for the Aquabats. The show often features hip bands and has become a cult show for many teens and collage students. They will be in Montreal this coming Sunday (Sept 5, 2010) @ Salle Wilfrid Pelletier with super music friend (and montréalais) Kid Koala.

Here they are on Jimmy Fallon last night with the Roots:

Here's the first song by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from The Social Network

Here is the very dark first track from Trent Reznor's score to David Fincher's Facebook movie The Social Network. I must admit I was not interested in a movie about facebook until I heard that Fincher (Fight Club, Zodiac) was directing, now this is the movie I think I have been the most excited about all year. Check out the trailer below as well.

Great Day for new songs!

First up the new song from Cee-lo is amazing. Fuck You, yes that is it's name and basically it's chorus is a fantastic song. I think think this song will be a huge hit even with the repeated cursing. We're supposed to get a proper video in the next week or too, but I kinda like this one:

Next up is a very funny video from Ted Leo and The Pharmacists for their song Bottle in the Cork. Great band great song, awesome video:

And finally is the first video from the up coming Roots and John Legend collaboration which will consist of all 60's and 70's political R&B covers. If this song is any indication it will be a great album. The video also features Common, check it out below:

Band of Horses vs. Cee-Lo Green

I love this song. Here is the original Band of Horses version -

And here is the Cee-Lo sexy hipster version:

Pop Montreal Rock Lottery @ Il Motore

I attended the 2nd annual Rock Lottery on Friday night and it turned out to be a lot more and better than I was ever expecting it to be.
For those who do not know the concept of Rock Lotteries it is as follows: They get together a bunch of musicians and and randomly put them together to form new bands. Each band are given only one week to write 2 songs. At the end of the week they perform their compositions to an audience.
So right of the bat I think everyone was caught off guard by the quality of the first act, the even incorporated vocal harmonies in their 2 tunes. I think that bands name was Posh Rebel Cowboys...interesting choice. I believe that was also the name of their 2nd tune.
Next up was a two piece that was made up of a friend of mine Mr. Andy Murphy from the local band Lakemaker and a drummer. This was probably the first time that I have ever seen Andy perform on stage with an electric guitar and it really worked. They played simple punky garage rock tunes but it sounded great. This is what make this Rock Lottery concept so interesting I guess, it pulls the musicians out of their comfort zone and pushes them into more unknown (to them) territory.
After that were a slew of more typically Montreal indie sounding acts. But I must admit the guy who performed in a speedo, or bikini breifs had people talking.
The act that ended up winning...not that this was really about winning, The Couch Tards, were surprising in that they were about of kids probably 18-20 and they sounded like Pavement meets Sonic Youth. Is the 90's lo-fi sound really coming back?
This was a great event and I look forward to seeing another one of these events.
Hopefully, I will be back to Il Motore next Saturday for Titus Andronicus.

Surprise, Surprise, Imagine Festival canceled.

Toronto's Imagine Festival, which was supposed to be the largest concert in that cities history has been "postponed" until next year. This is after multiple delays and setbacks for the festival that was supposed to channel the "spirit of Woodstock '69." Originally set to take place over Canada Day weekend it was pushed back until Labour Day weekend and is now off completely. The cancellation probably has to do with the lack of any large known bands on the lineup, it's a tough draw to your festival when no-one knows who the hell any of the bands are...even when tickets are free.

New M.I.A. Video for XXXO

Not sure how I feel about the video yet, but I do really enjoy the song. Definitely the most catchy tune off her new album but certainly not the best.

August 2010

Hmmm, maybe I'll try updating this thing.... it's only been 2 years.
